Design Strategy and Use of Form-Z

In my approach towards digital design, I am interested in how three-dimensional modelling can help visualise or create imaginary landscapes and I would like to see how architectural spaces can dramatize or tell a story.

In depicting the journey of the characters my approach will be to analyse the book and represent in order some important moments in the story as a sequence of architectural spaces. Some parts of the story take place in specific buildings, such as the faun’s cave, the beavers’ den, the White Witch’s castle or the palace of the kings. Others take place in less ‘architectural’ spaces but the themes, ideas, and emotions of these moments can be abstracted and imagined as architectural spaces.

In designing a museum for a fantasy world I will be treading the line between fantasy and reality and I would like to do this in a humorous fashion, depicting a magical world, yet with familiar banal elements typical of a museum-display cases, signs and maps. The use of Form Z coupled with Photoshop can supplement this. Form Z will help to experiment with unusual forms, and will maintain the fantasty quality while the use of Photoshop or illustrator will help to add ‘real’ photographic elements. I view the design as an additive process where the rooms will stem from a central space which will be modeled first. The other spaces will also be connected en suite so that the ‘visitor’ can use the spaces in sequence continuing in a loop just as the story begins and ends with passage through the wardrobe.

I am also interested in transitions and boundaries between spaces so I will use form Z to test views through spaces and different conditions, textures, materials. I will use Form Z to test in 3D designs created on paper or 2D drafting.

Project Representation

In keeping with the humorous theme of the applying a contemporary popular museum approach to a fantasy world, I will display the museum design in a website mimicking typical “virtual tours” found online for many famous museums. Similarly my print format will be in the form of a brochure.
