* The objective of this course is to familiarize students with the many varied types of dwelling design, from the dawn of civilization to the end of the 20th century. *In this course, housing design is viewed as an architectural response to a broad set of cultural and physical forces intrinsic to particular societies and environments. *The study of housing prototypes thus not only involves the study of the roots of architecture, but also focusses on the delicate balancing act  between  architectural expression, socio-economic realities and physical opportunities and limitations The course was given by the late Professor Norbert Schoenauer for many years, and has been given by  Professor Pieter Sijpkes since 1999. to intro text2
