Introduction

* The objective of this course is to familiarize students with the many varied types of dwelling design, from the dawn of civilization to the end of the 20th century.
*In this course, housing design is viewed as an architectural response to a broad set of cultural and physical forces intrinsic to particular societies and environments.
*The study of housing prototypes thus not only involves the study of the roots of architecture, but also focusses on the
delicate balancing act  between  architectural expression, socio-economic realities and physical opportunities and limitations

The course was given by the late Professor Norbert Schoenauer for many years, and has been given by
Professor Pieter Sijpkes since 1999.
