Laval Street Facade Project

In this project we were to choose a single building on Laval Street in Montreal, which is known for its colourful row-houses, and document it through sketches and photographs.  Then, we were to assume that there was a fire that completely destroyed our chosen building, and we were to design a replacement.  Our project was to design only the facade, and not worry about any plans.  In the end, the entire class aligned their facades to see what kind of a "street" we had created.  The result was interesting to say the least.  In some cases adjacent buildings looked as if they belonged together, even though they were designed independently of one another.  In most cases, however, neighbours clashed and didn't seem to belong side by side in any way whatsoever.  It brought to mind the importance of considering existing conditions in desgining an infill such as this, which is a fairly common project in Montreal.
