The Cardboard Chair

An excerpt from the project description: "Working in teams of two, and using no more than one and one half sheets of 60" X 81" two-ply corrugated cardboard, design and construct a chair.  Your chair must be comfortable, light, stable and strong; it should also be easily assembled and disassembled, and efficiently packaged for transportation and storage."

My partner in this project was Ariane Truong, and a prime consideration in our design was comfort.  Looking through page after page of chair comfort guidelines and then measuring ourselves to see where our knees bent and where our lower backs rested led us to this design.  The fact that the two of us are basically the same height was beneficial in helping us design the chair, but as a result it is only really comfortable for those of about 5'9" - 6'0" tall.  Ariane and myself found the chair very comfortable, and so did most others.  The generous width of the chair and its overall form led others to call it the airline chair, but I'm sure it is more comfortable than any seat on a plane.  The chair cradles you as you sit into it, and offers plenty of lumbar support, as well as a head rest.

The chair is very strong--our preliminary model sat in the common area of the studio for over a week with numerous people sitting on it, and it never showed any signs of stress.  We used cardboard in its strongest orientations to achieve this strength--on edge, folded, and the two in combination.  The pictures are the best way to see how it holds itself up.
