Computer Aided Building Design

Assignment #3

Value: 10% of final mark.

Due: End of term, 2003

Goal: Create a rendered representation of a design idea for the house from assignments #1 and 2, without necessarily being "realistic". The ideas you communicate can range from lightness and shadow to weight, repetition and perspective, landscaping, nature and environment, style and history, or any other idea that you decide.

Part I

Start with an image from an initial source. Submit the initial image (scanned or printed), but untouched. This will form the first part of your parti presentation. If you wish, you can make this image your background, and leave it untouched for this part of the submission. Otherwise, submit it as a separate image. The initial file can be an image of a house that is well documented and that you find interesting. Alternately, you may use a converted AutoCAD file (by EPS transfer) from assignment #1 or a renderered image from assignment #2 as a starting point. Or, you could base the image on a classic painting that communicates ideas consistent with your design.

Part II

Modify the image in Part I, combined with other images from other sources, to demonstrate your design ideas. To accomplish this task you may, for example (choose one or more):

- modify the original image to add your parti design

- insert the image of your formZ model into a "context", making sure the perpective is correct

- use photo-collage of several images to explain your design ideas

- make experimental images, explaining your ideas abstractly, for example by combining digitally scanned paintings or other artwork.

- modify existing images' perspectives and proportions

- produce the image based on the classic painting that you have digitally altered

You must do the following:

(Every effort will be made to return your zip disk or CD, but is not guaranteed)

Marking breakdown:

- 10% design (subjective) - 15% quality of presentation

- 25% complexity/completeness of image - 50% use of techniques / quality of image
