HORSESHOE A relatively simply tool upon first examination, the design of the horseshoe is rich with complexity. Typically they are made with 5 holes on each side through which nails are punched and through the enamel of the hoof and hold the shoe in place. The 4 holes contain cleats that give the horse traction during the icy winter in which they often have to traverese hills while pulling heavy loads. Leo has said that the cleats were an innovation created by the dairy industry to make the delivery of milk more efficient. The cleats can changed as required by simply punching them out and replacing them. Rubber shoes were also invented to minimize the clopping sound of the horses travelling the streets in the early moring while residents were sleeping.
