wood
I started with a block of wood. This was truly and experiment..I have never worked with wood in this way before. I quickly learned that the grain of the wood is important. As I began to chisel I saw-sight-the wood begin to split as if with a mind of its own. With my limited experience I felt is best to work with it rather than try and ignore it. As I hit the chisel with the mallet there was resistance. I was trying to remove too much too fast. I change the angle. The pressure was different, the wood was removed more easily, more smoothly. A great variety of textures can be revealed. The harsh and erratic texture as the wood is removed from the block with the chisel. Once I had created sufficient voids in the block I began to sand the surfaces to varying degrees. Varying levels of sand paper remove the wood as a fine dust-the surface becomes smooth and matte. I left different surfaces at different levels of smoothness to remind myself of the possibilities. The result is variety of surface textures that can only be understood by being touched.
