Idea and Phenomenon |
a series of models were used to demonstrate how the light would effect the space. The effect of the combination of light and glass and the colours that these two produced seem to be crucial to the design. They also appear to be fundamental to the concept for the chapel and critical to the expression of that concept as it materializes architecturally. | |||||||||||||||
| This chapel that was designed and built for Seattle University. Steven Holl described the concept for the chapel as "a gathering of different lights", a reference to the variety of the student body and the Jesuit religion of the chapel. Light plays an important role in the chapel with each form of light corresponding to a different part of the Jesuit worship. Back lit spaces create a field of colour that are off set with a lens of the complementary colour. | ||||||||||||||||

| It is through the images of the interior of this chapel that you can begin to understand the importance of light in the space. Carefully placed 'cracks' in the wall let in small streams of light that reflect of the walls to create very dramatic glowing surface. I'm interested in Holl's ability to integrate the effects of the light|glass interaction so effectively into concept, program, and architecture. | ||||||||||||||||
