front
facade:
Architectural Review. June pg82 |
This building is the new home for the London Contemporary Dance School. For me the most interesting feature of this building is how the architects have taken advantage of its funtion to animate the facade. The completely glazed front is divided by a series of stair landings. These landings have been designed as warm-up areas for the dancers. The effect is most striking at night when the light from the centre creates silhouettes of dancers in motion. This feature creates visual interest, it opens the centre up to the community, and it begins to offer the public a glimpse into the world of the dancer. In this venue the public can now not only see the final productions at the facility's theatre but they can also begin to get an understanding of the process of dance. This increased exposure would surely increase the interest in the art of dance and the centre itself, but also, hopefully, offer a basis for a change in perception of the art of dance and the life of a dancer. | ||||||||||||
