Concept
Weaving into the town's fabric a series of much needed connections to the city's core, both physically and metaphorically, was the intent of my project. An open-air market, where people and merchandise naturally connect, was conceptualized in the void between the two rows of existing buildings through the creation of a grid that tied together storefronts on both sides of the railroad tracks. Within this framework, a series of follies was created that were intended to be used in a variety of ways, from market booths to picnic shelters, from spaces to play to uses not yet even imagined. The flexibility and dynamism of the spaces created would hopefully be useful and enjoyable to almost everyone in the town, and thus serve as a catalyst for the repopulation and restoration of Lincoln's downtown core.
