002. bodegas ysios, santiago calatrava, 1998 alava rioja (laguardia) spain two lifting reinforced concrete walls, separated 26 meters; length overall is of 196 meters. the cover is the fundamental element in the conception of the project-aluminum. structurally it is formed by laminated wood beams, that support on the lateral walls, placed on inclined planes and in cross-sectional sense to the longitudinal axis of the building. thus, its surrounding outside creates a regulated surface combining concave and convex surfaces.

004. le clos jordan , gehry lincoln, ontario....35acre niagara escarpment 2006
Surrounded by environmentally protected forest and woodlands, the winery will be hidden from view, some 1,500 feet from the nearest road (Regional Road 81). As visitors drive around the edge of the vineyard, the winery will slowly reveal itself, complementing the landscape as a gently flowing structure with softly curving white stucco walls and an undulating metal roof, reflecting the natural landscape and the sky (it is yet to be determined whether the roof will be titanium or stainless steel). Gehry sees it as “a silver cloud floating over the vineyard with the winery spreading out beneath it.” The winery will operate on multiple levels both above and below grade to take advantage of the natural gravity flow within the winemaking process. Sections for each of the key stages in wine making, including grape crushing, de-stemming, pressing, tank and barrel fermentation, together with a tasting lounge, a wine boutique, and a glass-enclosed gathering area in the red wine cellar, would be organized around a central, great hall from which each area would be clearly visible. The current design for the great hall calls for a series of floor-to-ceiling (possibly colored) glass columns soaring dramatically from their base in the underground cellar. will most likely be a mid-sized winery (25-30,000 barrels), and could cost as much as $30 million.

007. rafael moneo Chivite Winery
Señorío de Arínzano
At the end of the 80´s the Chivite family bought the property known as “Señorío de Arínzano” located in the township of Aberín, district of Estella that extends along on both sides of the meandering river Ega. Among the structures that have been built over the years, the most outstanding are the Palace of the Commander of the Arsenal, crowned by statues carved in stone; a small neo-classical church dating from the early XIX c.; and a XVIII c. manor house. The new winery incorporates the three above mentioned structures: The Tower, the Manor and the Church dedicated to St. Martin The new buildings are arranged in an arc that encloses and embraces these existing structures.
These new buildings reflecting the wine making process include:
An enclosed courtyard for receiving the grapes.
A simple quadrangular structure formed by five halls in which
the grapes are pressed and elaborated.
A pavilion housing the containers for the handling of raw grapes and the barrels for fermentation.
A hall sunken slightly into the ground where the barrels for the crianza are stored.
An isolated building with access on two levels, containing the bottling plant as well as the offices, tasting rooms and commercial activities.
The new winery is built with concrete walls, hammered and worked so that in a short time they will acquire a patina resembling stone. Wood was used for the windows and the roof structure, finished with copper on the outside. The bodega has been equipped in accordance with the most advanced techniques. The family of Julian Chivite Marco, in whose memory the winery was built, has spared nothing in order that the wines bearing the name “Señorío de Arínzano” do justice to these lovely vineyards, forming part of a landscape, that manifests the history of the place.

The architecture of this winery alludes to vernacular structures of European winemaking regions while remaining resolutely modern itself.

014. dominus estate, completed 1997 dominus winery was designed by the Swiss architects, Herzog and de Meuron...approach was to integrate the winery into the landscape, echoing our belief that the vineyard is of utmost importance. Indeed, from a distance, the gabion structure dissolves into the landscape and it has been dubbed by the locals "the stealth winery." Filled with basalt rocks from the nearby American Canyon, the stainless steel baskets are both an aesthetic and technical choice. Generally used to retain dirt along highways, here the gabions are used to moderate the extreme temperatures of the Napa Valley.
Dominus' glass offices provide panoramic views, allowing us to follow at all times the activity in the vineyard, key to producing a great wine. note on their website re: tours + tastings= Due to a very restrictive use permit, we are not allowed to receive visitors. Please accept our sincere apologies.
