Canadian Museum for Human Rights is created as an iconic institution to inform, impact and educate. It is a place that brings people together in understanding and mutual acceptance of our fundamental rights as humans. This grand institution is located at The Forks, a prominent site in the heart of Winnipeg. The proposal is developed conceptually as visual link between the park and the city. Therefore, the building takes the form of opening arms extending out to the urban core. The defining elements of the museum are its two main walls, continuous planes which cut through all other volumes. As result the connecting axis is always clear to the visitor. Furthermore, the visitor’s movement throughout the museum is guided by one of the walls that ultimately lead to The Tower of Hope. The galleries that are positioned at different levels gradually ascend to this final experience of reflection. The juxtaposition of the galleries and differences in levels create spatial events throughout the museum. Inserted interior courtyards add to the richness and complexity of visitor’s experience. At these instances horizontal planes are broken up by vertical beams of light from above. The final destination, located at the highest point of the building, opens up to the magnificent view on vast Manitoba landscape. At night it is luminous beacon that can be seen from a far. |
