This Gothic Revival Church (ca. 1923) was converted by Blitch Knevel into the first PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) program in Louisiana. A public/private partnership developed the facility to take advantage of historic tax credits and neighborhood development incentives. The church and rectory were converted into activity and therapy areas. Extensive national research of existing PACE programs resulted in the design, which received a National Design Award from AAHSA (American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging) and AIA (American Institute of Architects).

Cost: $2,200,000
Area: 12,000 sf
Completion Date: 2005

This project offers a simple and efficient solution to a complex problem : the abandon of major religious buildings. A care center for elderly requires large rooms and a lot of space dedicated to barrier free circulation. The program can be incorporated in the existing church without requiring major alterations to the structure. The high vaults and the great natural lighting create an inspiring environment in which elderly may feel comfortable and confident.
