K. S. Melnikov
Architect Agitator
My precedent study focuses on the work of the Russian architect Konstantin S. Melnikov. The four first projects presented are his work. I compare each one of them with a publicity phenomenon in order to draw a link between advertising and propaganda. The fifth precedent is about more traditional means of poster propaganda and publicity. Born in 1890, the Russian architect Melnikov realized most of his works between 1917 and 1937. A recent graduate of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, he rapidly became a
prominent architect when the Bolshevik came into power in 1917. Like a lot of Russian avant-garde architects he was favoured by this period’s search for a new imagery. However, his career considerably slowed down in the thirties and virtually ended when Stalin came into power. |
