TIME | "Design is concerned with concious distortion of time, distance and size. If it achieves none of these distortions it is unlikely to be more than the elaboration of the status quo. | The value of permanence must be proven, not merely assumed." (CP,2003)
[ CP extensively explored ideas of unpredictability, anticipation, adapatability and choice in both his built and unbuilt projects. Of particular interest to me is his attitude towards cities and infrastructure: both re-using existing infrastrusture in innovative ways and developing new urban infrastructural landscapes. He aimed to create time based architecture enabling cities to grow and change to adapt to their future potential.
CP advocated an architecture of impermanence. There is no such thing as a permanent building and so architects should stop trying to design them. The concept of permenance in the context of urban infrastructure, is one that I would like to pursue. Through the eyes of CP, I have begun to think about the relationship between TEMPORARY and PERMANENT interventions. Whereas I once veiwed the two as opposing poles between which there lay no middle ground- I have started to rethink this and now believe that there is infact a gradiant that links the concepts, a gentle scale that bridges these two ideas. I was particulariy influenced by the interaction-center of 1971 in which CP drew plans that detailed in equal proportion both the construction and subsequent demolish of the building 20 years later. Thinking about the lifespan of a contemporary intervention seems to me to be critical. ] |
