This technique is also used by Robert Smithson in his Non-Site series. Similar to the Tavole House, once the stone has been removed from its geological context, it assumes a new identity. Only by removing the rocks from their original site and boxing them for gallery presentation, does the gap separating nature from history widen into an abyss. The immediate moment of observation pulls both the rock and the metal casement in this abyss and begins to address the artificial use of natural materials.
