precedents 2 : strategy
Minimal Sculpture: Robert Morris + Donald Judd + Robert Smithson

The gestalt is used to read the selected buildings in order to gain an understanding of material and structural mechanisms.
For instance, when looking at the Lonely House by Herzog and deMeuron (or Stone House as it is commonly known) in Tavole, Italy, we can quickly exhaust the form of the building and take a closer look at the sensational qualities of the stone. The house is seemingly constructed using a customary method in the region; rubble stone bearing walls. However, the stone does not appear to be the fundamental structure of the house; the concrete beams and columns seem to fulfill this requirement.

So what is the stone for?

One can look to three simple examples to perhaps explain;

    The first is a brick wall that is constructed of course upon course of brick and mortar. The brick is read as a function of the load bearing structure.
The second is a brick wall, where the brick is inlaid to form a cross. The wall and brick as structure surrender to an overall reading of the unit as symbol.
The third example is a brick wall, where the brick is inlaid with no particular order. The wall is then not read at all rather the brick is exposed for its sensational qualities.
