The title, “Index of Difference or Separateness within a Prevailing Matrix of Sameness”, is examined by Yve-Alain Bois in the cited article. The phrase is taken from Rosalind Krauss’ analysis of Kuleshov’s collages in relation to Serra’s “Shift” and it is through this discussion that we understand the “perceptive primacy of spatial continuity…the continuity produced by means of discontinuity”. The discontinuities appear through a promenade, a temporal experience, and challenge us to piece together the content from involuntary memory.
