Maps from Montreal Atlases, click to enlarge
First map is from the Goad Atlas of Montreal, 1881 (pg 151 & 166), next from Pinsoneault Atlas of the City of Montreal, 1906 (Plate 5) and the last from Goad Atlas of Montreal, 1912 (Plates 37 & 41). Pump Station appears after 1881 in lot number 34. Maps demonstrate that there has always been an awkward merging of streets here. We can also see the gradual change of street names from english to french. The station takes its name from Craig St which ran just north of it. The number of buildings in this neighbourhood has decreased substantially since these maps were drawn.
All atlases mentioned were found in the Rare Books Department at McGill University Library.
Above image shows a local factory which has since been demolished. Right hand side of image shows Papineau Square and its formal park design. Papineau Square at one point had a large market place. Square is identified on the western edge of the above maps. Factory image taken from Noppen, Luc, Du Chemin du Roy a la Rue Notre-Dame, Ministere des Transports du Quebec, Bibliotheque Nationale du Quebec, 2001, pg 66. Image is not dated but we can assume it was created late 19th or early 20th century.
