Bonsecours
The Marché Bonsecours is an impressive and intimidating building that looms over the Bonsecours Basin. Built between 1844 and 1847, it was home to the Members of Parliament for a short time in 1849 (when the Sainte Anne Market Parliament Building was burned down by Tory rioters), as well as Montreal City Hall for a period of more than 25 years. The significance of the Marché Bonsecours lies in the fact that it was the principal public market in Montreal for more than one hundred years. It therefore played an integral part in the cultural, social, and political development of the city.
