Landscaping is another major user of water, since 50% of the water consumed
in a building is for outside use. Green building designers should consider
using tolerant native species rather than exotic trees or grasses.
It is also better to water landscape deeply every 4 hours than shallowly
every two. Irrigation systems should also be programmed to do their
work at the time of the day where less water would evaporate, i.e. in the
evening and over night.
Grass lawns require not only vast amounts of water resources, but also introduce excess use of pesticides and fertilizers into communities, not to mention the gas required to mow them. |
