The Johnson Wax Building Research tower was the first time the laboratory design broke away from the rectangular model.   In the previous rectangular models, the laboratory equipment and places were scientists and their assistants carried out the experiments were located  in the central part of the building, along with ducts and shafts and support services: elevators, stairs, piping, heating and ventilation ducts. The offices... were generally located around the perimeter.  (Russel & Dana) The new organization of laboratories  around a service core allowed for plenty of natural light in the work areas.
