Qualitative vs. Quantitative

"From the view that science will eventually explain all natural phenomena, and new technologies will evolve to cater for all our needs,  came the reduction of the design of buildings to a sub-branch of engineering - controlled not by individuals but by economic and physical forces... which submits design to a "scientific methodology."               (Hale, Building Ideas, 2000)

Can the montreal genomics and proteomics center steer away from a purely functional program and introduce more qualitative aspects to the program?

Connector Space Gallery: Gene Art - addressing the Ethical concerns
 Eduardo Kak

"Many molecular biologists do their work in private and pretend it does not have social impact, yet the technologies they develop -- such as genetic engineering -- will eventually enter the entire society," says Kac. "By denying Alba presence in the exhibit, the institute director is trying to keep everything in the lab under wraps and impede debate."

"Banks in Pink and Blue," 1999
Liquid nitrogen, human semen, tanks, framed contracts

Two cryogenic sperm banks, one pink and one blue, contain sex-selected sperm samples from people the artist chose. These are sorted by the gender they would produce. Framed legal contracts hanging near the banks pose questions about DNA and scientific experiments

Rooftop Garden: Reflections & Discussions
it will be more private and off of the ground.  It can take advantage of the sun from the roof.  It offers a view of the mountain, downtown, and the reservoir... what a place to contemplate the fate of humanity.

Halls: Casual Encounters Do not underestimate the type of activities that can go on in the halls.  The current Genome Center is so short on space that I learnt many of the parties they have are celebrated in the corridors.  Interior streets.  Design in modules in clusters with communal adjoining communal spaces

Play Time

Our popular Image of scientists at leisure was left to us by Einstein: playing classical violin, reading, abhorring physical exercise. But many biochemists are "physical," the kind of people who blow off steam hard rather easy. When Tom Roberts was Lynn Klotz’s graduate assistant they played every pickup basketball game they could find, along with others who are still their major colleagues and contacts. Mark Ptashne in known to be a good squash player and top level ping pong player… and Jan Pero is said to be an excellent volleyball player. (Sylvester & Klotz, 1983)

even Einstein needs to blow off steam sometimes...

There are many opportunities for breaks through out the day.  They are regulated by the time lapse of the experiments. It is important to have places for a quick retreat for the mind.  A small fitness center in the bottom floor would the perfect mental break from the monotony of the work.  Opportunity for bouldering walls along the corridors.

While I was visiting the Montreal Genome Center at the General Hospital, the lab technician that shared an office with Andrei Verner left the office and came back in tight fitness wear.  She was on the way to the General''s  aerobics room.
