Concept
Contemporary architects in North America face many challenges as a profession. They’re loosing control of the construction industry, they’re inadequately compensated, but above all they’re poorly understood. The general public knows little about what architects do and are capable of doing. Designing buildings is often the only facet people associate as architect-related.
The architectural profession needs to be promoted. The public needs to learn what we as architects can do for them and their communities.
How can we educate about and promote the practice of architecture?
How can we change the focus of architecture from high-design to socially conscious and functional design?
Can these problems be addressed and/or solved architecturally?
What is needed is a change in attitude, finding a way to shift the way the public and professionals think about architecture. This process will take time, people and many, many buildings. I intend to program and design only one. Hopefully, this building will serve as a first step in making architecture more accessible.
