Healing Spaces

The following is a list of the“healing” spaces, the program designed to help the profession itself. This part of the program looks within to help advance the profession in a more compassionate way. It is this program that will create a better link between architects and their communities as well as promote various social projects within the neighbourhood and city.

Community Spaces

  • Services to help architects in practice: legal, accounting, marketing, etc., to assist architects practicing, this could include a law office, specializing in architectural law or an accountants office to help architects manage their finances.
  • Community spaces for the neighbourhood: classrooms and gathering spaces to house local activities: this space would be flexible to suit the needs of the local community. As many of the rooms would be left vacant after business hours, these spaces could be given back to the community for their use in the evenings and weekends.
  • Neighbourhood architectural office: information center where local residents could meet with a project representative to voice their concerns about an upcoming project. This could also include spaces where the project architect could meet with members of the community to address their concerns.

Social Architecture Office

  • Social architecture promotional office: Centre to promote the creation of socially relevant projects. Spaces could include offices, conference room, small kitchen for the workers.

Too often these important projects are not recognized in terms of design and many architects would rather design those projects that could win them other commissions and awards. To rectify this problem, the office could support an award program that recognizes community projects, to re-establish a level of prestige to social projects. Furthermore, the office could lobby for donations to fund and commission projects of this nature.

Possible projects could include:

  • Homeless shelter
  • Battered women’s shelter
  • Health clinic
  • Retirement home
