A cross: student co-op apartment
Prof. Jacques Rousseau

Design idea

The site is next to Duluth street and adjacent to the historical street: St. Laurent. On the south side, there is a monastery, part of which was transformed into a hospital. The building will be used for visiting artists of McGilI University.

The design idea was from the site context, which was the cross layout of the monastery. I used a cross-like movement as a connector to link eight units, attempting to blur psychological boundary among users and encourage their meeting, information exchange and so on. In addition, the cross movement can be read not only from the plan, but also from the façades. The entire building is lifted one storey (5m) above the ground, to provide easy car access from existing parking lot to the Duluth street.
