CCA. An Industrial Landscape Observed: the Lachine Canal. 1992. The book provides broad historical knowledge of Lachine Canal and specific information of Lock 3 area. It also mentions the building types that were designed according to the industrial process and the demand of function. This is a good opportunity to understand selected buildings and site in depth. Derrida, Jacques. Edmund Husserlxs Origin of Geometry: An Introduction. Trans. John P. Leavey. Nicolas Hays, Ltd. New York. 1978. It is a quite deep topic, but it provides a fresh thought of how to create a new space. In this commentary-interpretation of the famous appendix to Husserl's Crisis, Derrida relates writing to such key concepts as differing, consciousness, presence, and historicity. Jacques Derrida similarly maintains that the search for connections between geometry and historic forms (which include architectural) must be tempered with an awareness of the inherent futility of such an endeavor. Geruson, Richard T.. McGrath, Dennis. Cities and Urbanization. Prager Publisher: New York. 1977. The book is about the evolution and urbanization of cities in Europe, and North American starting from Industrial Revolution. It offers the themes for the pavilions of the thesis project. Interview with Steven Holl. GA. Japan. 1999. The design method and philosophy of Steven Holl is the study focus. Kubler, George. The Shape of Time. New Haver and London: Yale UP. 1962. “Kubler's thesis that art cannot be considered only temporally, but needs to be categorized according to metaphorical and visual similarities to works of all contexts, was a groundbreaking one for its time. His interdisciplinary approach to understanding objects motivated the understanding of objects as being linked by their similarity of ideals and constructs, rather than temporal classifications.” The shape of time is presented when the relationships between ideas and objects are connected. the space type of the thesis project and the arrangement of exhibits in the project will use Kubler’s idea as a reference. Olsberg, Nicholas. Carlo Scarpa Architect: Intervening with History. Montreal: The Montreal Press. 1999. The book is the collection of Scarpa’s exhibition held in CCA. Scarpa was developed a carefully thought-out methodology to incorporate new structures into the fabric of a city's historical buildings. Working within Italy's many layers of history, he built onto existing structures without doing easy, literal reconstructions or leaving too much of his own mark on the site. His work demonstrates a sensitivity to a building's history, location and scale--something often disregarded by designers and urban planners. One reusing building project will be one of precedents. Piano, Renzo. Renzo Piano : Logbook. New York: The Monacello Press.1997. Renzo Piano is the author of the book that includes his complete work and his reflections on architecture.
