lock keeper's house

This house, located on the lachine canal (lock no.3), went through many changes in design. The outcome, however, was a result of a combination of things: first, the design and build of a 1:1 scale object that was to be integrated in the design of the house; second, the narative associaed with the house; third, the influence of Le Corbusier's weekend house.

The occupant is a musician, and the 1:1 scale object is a busyness of copper and steel pipes protruding from a cubic foot of dense concrete. The concrete is part of the facade and the pipes are a metaphor for wind instruments.

The main concept was to divide a public lot into private (for the lock keeper) and public. This was done by implementing a solid concrete wall with protrusions of the pipes to makes the wall interactive with the public. Thus it is a wall of interaction and not of separation, and yet it performes the function of separation.

The entire house is made of brick, save for the dense concrete wall.
