This book talks about exactly what my thesis talks about. It is about how a working class area can achieve a power, a development, through the implementation of sports. - Aalto, Alvar, Between Humanism and Materialism, New York, 1998

'Aalto's architecture was an unorthodox, inclusive fusion of opposite intellectual categories and design strategies. Instead of aiming at conceptual and formal purity, it sought to reconcile opposites such as nature and culture, history and modernity, society and the individual, tradition and innovation, standardization and variety, the universal and the regional, the intellectual and the emotional, the rational and the intuitive.'

'In every case one must achieve a simultaneous solution of opposites.........Nearly every design task involves tens, often hundreds, sometimes thousands of different contradictory elements, which are forced into a functional harmony only by man's will. This harmony cannot be achieved by any other means than those of art.' - Alvar Aalto.

- Schildt, Goran, Alvar Aalto: The Decisive Years, Finland, 1986

- Alvar Aalto in Seven Buildings, Helsinki, 1998

This book analyzes Aalto's approach to seven buildings which reflect his thinking at their respective times. The seven buildings are: Paimio Sanatorium, Viipuri City Library, Villa Mairea, Saynatsalo Town Hall, The National Pensions Institute, Rautatalo Office Building, and Vuoksenniska Church.

- 20th Century Architecture: Finland, Helsinki, 2000

This book talks about the evolution of Finnish Architecture and the search for a National Style. Since Finland is cold country, the architects there strive to capture the most optimum amount of natural light both in the winter and in the summer. The idea of nature plays a big part in the design of space. Since the population density is low, there is an abundance of trees and wooded areas which are nurtured and captured in the design of a building. Nature and building work as one whole.
