This project is to design a recital hall and related facilities for the School of Music at Queen's university in Kingston, Ontario. The challenge of this project lies not only in the need to provide an excellent facility for the various performing groups of the School - orchestra, choir, chamber ensembles and soloists - as well as visiting performing groups, but also to achieve economies in planning and construction methods, in order to make such a project viable under the present-day conditions of severe university budget constraints. In addition, the new recital hall constitutes an extension of a fine existing building, designed by one of Canada's greatest 20th century architects, Ron Thom, and thus requires an imaginative and sensitive architectural approach.
