DESIGN mixed-use project with special focus on the housing areas based on well-researched and informed historical traditions of Art Deco. & SITE bounded by Dorchester, Greene, Ste. Catherine, and Atwater; it is situated in one of the most desirable areas of the city.
Following an extensive research on Art Deco and its architecture, we chose to center our project on the issue of motion. Cars play an important role in our design generating both the streets and buildings. Tied closely to Westmount ideals, this community is concerned with issues of appearance as much as function. On Ste. Catherine street, we suggested minor changes to the large office towers. To the south, we lined Dorchester with houses to mirror those across the way. The new street created behind these row houses serves as an access to residents while providing some privacy to newly created shops and apartments. At the centre of the plan is a fountain big enough to serve as a skating rink in the winter. Previously parking lots, this function has been hidden underground as well as provided to each individual residence. Similar courtyards to that of the fountain are located along this central corridor of movement to promote gathering of residents and visitors in a proud new addition to Lower Westmount. Top Next
