Living Area

This will accomodate a total of 300 graduate students, administrative support personnel, as well as visiting scholars and guests. A majority of the units are for single students who occupy their own unit but share the washrooms, showers, and dining facilities. 50 suites equipped with kitchens and private bathrooms are available for married students. 30 units equipped with private bathrooms are for visiting scholars and guests, but they can also be occupied by regular students depending on the actual situation.

Single Students

Possibility of providing various room sizes to accomodate different needs of students, and provide opportunities for more organic planning of living spaces. The floor areas of single rooms in Canadian university residences range from 102 sq. ft. (University of Ottawa) to 126 sq.ft. (University of Manitoba).

These provide accomodation for married students and their families. They should have a more domestic atmosphere, and front or back of units should be connected to green space.

These are units for visiting scholars and guests who will stay in the residence anywhere from a few days to several months. These units should have private bathrooms, and they could be occupied by regular students as well.

Warden

Common Area

The common area should be centrally located in the residence that connects all other parts of the building. It will be the main point of entrance for students, visiting scholars, and the public. Student interaction should be maximized through the creative use of circulation and common spaces. Special consideration should be given to the distinction between public and private spaces.

Dining

  • Dining & Assembly Hall

    This is to be of the "Great Hall" type, dignified and impressive, suitable also for ceremonial and assembly occasions.

    The dining area will accomodate 330 persons at one sitting. There should be a raised High Table at one end. The volume can be doubled to accomodate visitors and non-resident students at two sittings during lunch time.

    Study Area

    Auditorium

    A 300 seating auditorium is used to hold public lectures and conferences. This can be used to serve both the needs of the university and the residence organized events.

    Administration

    The reception office will function as the general residence office, where student mail, registration, enquiries, etc. would be handled. Since it may also have sometimes to be used as a convention office, this should be kept in mind.
