Materials and form

As a starting point for the study of materials, I look at the typology of agrarian buildings in the region. Most of these buildings are barns built of wood, using trusses as the supporting structure for the roof. Some barns will be built with materials such as sheet metal or metal siding. The following photos were taken at the Vignoble de la Bauge. This winery also has many animals. The facilities and machinery are therefore used for working the land for the animals as well as for the cultivation of grapes.

The following photos are taken at various locations within the general area of the region of Dunham, all of which serve to demonstrate how and where certain materials are used in a typical agrarian structure. However, the winery does not emmulate the typical agrarian structure, and as such must become the object of a different approach in use of materials. It is nonetheless important to understand the requirements of buildings erected for agricultural purposes.

A small shed, used for storage of hay for the animals; built of wood with concrete block supports
The structure below is an 'open air' shed, consisting only of a supporting wood structure and metal roof. The structure becomes a storage space for corn ( for the animals) or wood logs and they in turn shape the wall contained within the structure.
