Environmental concerns and improvement strategies proposed/

Since the closing of the Canal in the earlier 70's, the contamination situation had rised to a health hazard in some parts.  Sediments of Heavy Metal substance accumulated along the Canal has an average of 30cm, the structures of the bank wall have deteriored over time, soil has been contaminated to a risky level, and at the same time sewer from local area is still fed into the Canal at various outlets.

As the Joint Panels of the authorities have preparation to re-open the canal for certain water sports as part of the recreational development agreed in the early 90's, methods and strategies need to be adapted for decontamination.  The two alternatives analyzed are Encapsulation and Terrestrial containment. As there are already three Capsules filled with contaminates inside the canal, Encapsulation will involve the further dredging of the sediments and storaging them in tanks placed various along or inside the canal.  Although it proves to be the more econmical options, this method only leads to a temporary solution and pertain to risks of leakage and deterioration.  At the same, while Terrestrial containment offers the permanence and assurance as it involves the process of dredging, decontamination, and landfilling, such alternative proves to be extremely costly.

It is decided in 1996 that no decontamination would be required as long as there shall be no water-sport activities that could increase the current of the canal and resulting the up-draft of the sediments to endanger the banks.  Cost would be rather spent on the redevelopment plan of the linear park.
