Design Objectives |
The overall objective is the Reconstruction of the Bannockburn Public School, a two story 1924 red brick school house, into a modern school house that facilitates the Montessori Philosophy of Education. The new school design will try to translate the Montessori Philosophy into built form. The new school design shall function in direct opposition to the institutional style of architecture, which held children captive at their desks and made classrooms dull and inanimate so that the children could look at nothing else other than that teacher. The renovated school shall excite and stimulate the child, induce curiosity, hold the child's gaze when necessary, and encourage socializing and experiential learning. The school shall also be an extension of the home environment, so that a child will feel couragous and confident to wander around the school, and continuously rediscover it. The renovated school shall maintain the character and integrity of the original school while softening its institutional demeanor, and presenting a professional, yet non-traditional, face to the community. |
