the art of dance stems from the attempt to surpass gravitation, which binds us to the earth.

the site presented to us was a corner site, with the three adjoining lots still waiting to be built upon. the proposed idea was to incorporate all four houses and use their mitoyen walls to anchor the steel beams across. having the beams anchored in four places would allow for the floor slabs of the corner house to be cantilevered, in addition to allowing for complete flexibility in the arrangement of large glazed openings on all other sides. for our purposes, only the corner house was designed, but the above principles should be kept in mind.
the ground floor is based upon the open plan concept, where all the rooms can be used for viewing the performance. the studio has been placed at the most public part of the lot so that the dancer can be seen by everyone walking along the street. the second floor is made up of the public rooms in the house, where the family spends most of their time. these spaces overlook the dance studio, and can serve as additional spaces for viewing a performance. the third floor, with the bedrooms as well as the study/library for the mathematician, is the most private. the fully enclosed study is placed directly above the studio, and appears to be floating.
