alexander, christopher the oregon experiment oxford university press, new york, 1975.

this book is the masterplan for the university of oregon, and describes a practical way of implementing an explicit set of instructions for designing and building, which defines patterns at every scale, known as a pattern language. it is believed that the process of building and planning a community or campus will create an environment which meets human needs if it follows six principles: organic order, participation, piecemeal growth, patterns, diagnosis and coordination. of particular interest was the principle of participation, where the decision about what to build, and how to build it, is in the hands of the users. this is something i took part in, when sending out the survey to the students attending the school of architecture. i was interesting in seeing what they thought needed to be improved and/or changed. the principle of diagnosis also appealed to me, where spaces were placed in alive and dead categories, with the dead ones needing to be dealt with and the live ones left as they are.

mcgill schools of architecture and urban planning prospectus montreal, 1987.

this book describes all facets of the mcgill school of architecture, from its conception to the late 1980s. it describes in detail the history of the school, its academic content in undergraduate and graduate programs, library, staff, resources, scholarships, publications, and student work. of particular interest was the history of the school, as well as how the academic programs changed over time, depending on the director, faculty, and concerns of the architect at a given point in history - how the curriculum was adapted to meet the changing nature of the profession.

this issue was dedicated to 10 architecture schools across canada, from the university of british columbia school of architecture to the dalhousie university facutly of architecture in nova scotia. it was interesting to see what mcgill offered to their students compared to the other 9 universities, as well as how the university stands regarding computerization in the studio and the broader curriculum.
