because my site is on campus, most of the information i have gotten has been obtained from the programme de developpement, by-law #95-039 between mcgill university and the city of montreal. although the copy i was fortunate enough to get from brian and stanley (of the planning department at mcgill) dates from march 1995, i was told that not much has changed regarding these issues or anything else that may be of my interest. my focus was on the by-law concerning the development of the campus and authorizing the construction and occupancy of a building for the faculty of engineering. only the parts that apply are transcribed below.

sections I & II - territory

this by-law applies to the territory delimited by pine avenue .... university street .... sherbrooke street .... mctavish street .... docteur-penfield avenue .... which is refered to as the main campus grounds.

section IV - height

in the territory refered to in paragraph 1, the height in metres of buildings must be in accordance with the height prescribed in plan 2 .... entitled les limites de hauteur.

section V - density and land coverage

in sectors 2 and 6 of plan 1, the density is expressed by the floor area calculated by the ratio between the total floor area of buildings erected in a sector and the area of that sector, except for streets and lanes.

in sectors 2 and 6 of plan 1, the land coverage ratio is expressed by the ratio between the total land coverage of buildings erected in a sector and the area of that sector, except for streets and lanes.

in sectors 2 and 6 of plan 1, the maximum land coverage ratio is 35%. for land coverage ratio calculation purposes, the total land coverage of buildings, at the coming into force of this by-law, is 30 630.6 sq.m in sector 6, and the area of that sector is 117 309 sq.m.
