______________machine shops
The machine work shops are a perpetually dynamic environment and I think they should be exploited for their animation.  Even watching someone varnish or sand can be interesting, and for this I am considering sinking the machine level on a split level below grade with a catwalk access from grade. It may also be appropriate for the cafe and student lounges may also have the opportunity to onlook the processes underway in the shop.  I also think that the mechanical ventilation that the shop areas require may also be incorporated into the rhythm of the structure of the building.

studios

As the heart of the process, the studio configuration will most likely govern the planning of the building and regulate the the structure.  It is also the focus of concerns regarding light and the ample circulation of fresh air.  These areas should also affront the street and courtyard in order to provide an animated environment from the exterior and also provide stimulation for the artists within.

courtyard
The courtyard areas of this program focus upon both an area for congregation and as an exhibition area . sculpture garden.  Once again the play of light and shadow also comes into effect and particularly depending on the mass of the building.  The courtyard(s) will also determine the massing of the building as the height will restrict light from entering the courtyard.  This massing could also greatly assist the circulation as an architecturale promenade of the work in progress.

residual spaces
Following the concept of the architectural promenade, the residual spaces that comprise circulation areas will be introduced as exhibition and congregation areas. Additionally, these areas can be used for work spaces if their dimensions are considered adequate. This premise articulates an emphasis to avoid the typical double-loaded corridor that is conventionally associated with the public institution.

contemplation

The aspect of incorporating areas dedicated in particular to contemplation away from the collective environment of the institute is in keeping with the spirit of the artist as individual.  I am considering this area an integral component of the library, perhaps a library annex or cloister-like area.
