Build Next Door The final method of expansion is simply to build adjoining space to the existing library. The Boston Public library increased in this manner in the late 1970’s. A block of similar size to the original McKim Mead and White building was added to the back of the building. For this type of expansion to be possible there must be land available on which to build the expansion. Since the GBQ is a government project the expropriation of further land is a possibility. It is also a good idea to select a site which already accomodates future expansion. Expanding buildings are not just limited to libraries. Other types of buildings offer interesting precedents for building growth. BANK of ENGLAND
Over a period of 102 years the B of E increased to approximately ten times its original size. This required the expropriation of the surrounding land including a church and graveyard. The building's growth was limited by the size of its island site. Although not originally planned for such expansion, the 1826 form of the Bank of England was a stunning and fairly cohesive building.
Peculiarities arise in the plan as the geomoetry of the site is
accomodated.
