The first preliminary site inquiry considered the general effects of the autoroute Bonaventure between Rue William and Rue Brennan; such a long stretch can be daunting, given not only its physical size, but also its complicated urban topography. The area shaded orange below marks a possible site for intervention; while it maintains the interstitial quality imposed by the expressway, its south-east corner addresses the context of its neighbours. (Indeed, it faces a fast-developing area; see a fellow colleague's map of Cite Multimedia). The ground of the site presently berms up to meet the height of the offramp. The map below, dated from 1956, shows the area before the construction of the expressway, with the future Autoroute superimposed in grey. The area shaded green marks an area of particular interest discovered through study of historical maps. Even with the physical interruption of the raised train tracks, this area maintained its function as a public square. 1 . 2 . 3
