PROGRAMMING BEHAVIOUR "A weather station inside the Salt Water Pavilion receives data recording the water level and wind speed in the direct vicinity of the pavilion. These are used to calculate the emotive factor, which stipulates the pulse frequency of the colour environment. emotive factor (EF) = [0.7*(0.612*water level +1.79)] + [0.3(3.057*wind speed + 3.6)] The EF is used to trigger different sound effects, generated with the program SuperColliderthe only available program that is capable of real-time sound synthesis."(Oosterhuis, p.35) The otherwise unadulterated sights and sounds of the sea are cut, spliced, morphed, and translated into a digital kaleidoscope. The primary interface of sensory perception is effectively mediated by a set of parameters that take nature as raw input; the output is a dizzying array of visual and aural effects, with the consequence of wind and water having been pixelized into non-recognizable representations of themselves.
