The extreme design measures taken in the design and execution of the salt water pavilion serve as a starting point for critical exploration of "precedents." A matte black body slides out beyond the shore and over the Oosterschelde sea. Its skin evolved out of digital 'genes' that the architects kneaded and stretched to a geometrical complexity unheard of in otherwise analogue technologies. So the form sits, like a beached whale, impervious to its surroundings in its essentially black-box function of providing contrastly interactive light- and sound-scapes indoors. Architects at Oosterhuis associates call it a salt water pavilion, but it actively works as a nature 'interpretation' centre 1 . 2 |
