In looking for precedents that might contribute to my thesis project, I have not limited myself to specific buildings that have similar programs and sites, in fact I had to stretch to find anything even remotely similar to what I am proposing. I have however, selected precedents which address various issues that I am interested in exploring in my thesis, each one significant in its own way.
In Tadao Ando's work I have not made reference to a specific work, although any of his row houses would be relevant. It is his philosophhy and his approach that interests me most. "My interest isin taking creative approaches to such banal materials [concrete] that may be contrary to everyone's expectations". From Tod William and Billie Tsein I have included an exhibition entitled "Domestic Arrangements", which uses the house as a testing ground to explore the potential for the use of humble materials to create interesting spaces and forms. A woodshop and comunity center designed by Rolf Gertslauer and Inger Molne provides an interesting look at a similar program that celebrates craftsmanship, and ?"s Guklhupf seems like a cabinetmaker's toy built in the scale of architecture.
