Tadao Ando

Ando's projects invoke a sense of profound emtiness.  They rely on an uncomplicated geometry and the use of a limited palette of materials, mostly concrete and glass to "reveal a subtlety and richness in spacial articulation".  He uses light sparingly, employing it as a building material rather than strictly as a source of illumination. Ando writes, " I believe that "architectural materials" are not limited to wood or concrete that have tangible forms, but go beyond to include light and wind, which appeal to our senses." P 13  His sensitivity to the craftsmanship of his buildings comes from an understanding of architecture developed through osmosis, through the experience rather than the study of architecture.  His understanding of experience find their expression in spaces for habitation that engage and inspire.
