UNDER/EXPOSED

Between the 22nd of December 1998 and the 4th
of January 1999 Under/Exposed, a unique photo
exhibition, taking place in the Stockholm
Underground
as a part of Stockholm's events as
the European Cultural Capital of the Year.

Never before have so many photographers from
all over the world, representing the varied nature
of photography, participated in the same
exhibition. Neither have their photographs been
displayed in such huge formats and to so many
people.

The idea behind the exhibition is for the public to
experience art in an ordinary setting. To offer a
break from the constant pressure of advertising,
and make people reflect and find their own
interpretation of the pictures in front of them. It's
meant to show world class photography to people
who rarely or never visit galleries.

The visitors - whether they be citizens on their
way to and from work, or people who have come
specifically to view the exhibition - can see the
photographs at the 19 stations and get moved,
shocked, happy, upset or amazed. It is certain that
people who have never given a second thought
to the visual messages around them will suddenly
be forced to view their surroundings in a different
light. Maybe this will have a lasting effect on their
way of seeing.

The entrance fee to the exhibition will be just an
underground ticket. One million copies of the
exhibition catalogue are printed by the
newspaper Metro and will be available free of
charge.

Curators of the exhibition are Greger Ulf Nilson
and Lars Liljendahl. The photographers taking
part will range from the world famous to
photographers who may be well known in their
own particular countries, but who never had their
works exhibited in Sweden. There will also be
internationally famous Swedish and
Scandinavian photographers.

The objective of under/exposed is to show the
qualities, diversity and richness of photography to
the public at large, far beyond the cultural
"establishment". There will be no single theme
limiting the content of the exhibition. Every
exhibited picture will represent the photographer,
but also the art of photography as a whole.

The varied nature of the themes will heighten the
experience. Hopefully the presentation of every
single photograph will add an extra dimension to
the exhibition as a whole.

The great vision is that after its first outing in
Stockholm, under/exposed will tour in other
underground systems throughout the world, such
as Tokyo, London, Paris, Berlin and Moscow.

None of this would be possible without the
enthusiasm from a number of leading
photographers as well as the support from local
and international sponsors.
