La Societe de transport de la Communaute urbaine de Montreal (STCUM)

The current proposal for the extension of the metro line will be the first since the original development of the system. The system was originally conceived of in the early 1960's prior to the World Exposition 1967 hosted in Montreal. Each of the stations that comprise the system were designed by different architects and design teams; hence the great variation in the designs of the stations. Specific conditions required the trains to travel via wheels with rubber traction along rails powered by electricity. This system is unique in the world of subterranian transit.

As the metro system of Montreal currently reaches the limits of Montreal Island only to the North and South of the island, City transit has been reliant on the Agence metropolitaine de transport (AMT) trains above ground. Also, the bus systems extend beyond the Island boundaries into the West Island, South Shore and Laval. It is clear that STCUM has avoided the cost of extending the line thus far due to the inherent cost of developing the system. But the benefits, in particular the speed, has finally outwayed the cost.
