Extension to Montreal metro line

There has been a joint effort involving the city of Montreal and the city of Laval to develop an extension to the orange metro line, that presently ends at Henri Bourassa station, into Laval. The 'Societe de transport de la Communaute' is chiefly responsible for its realisation and the project is being funded by the government of Quebec. Niether City of Laval officials nor STCUM have released much iformation to the public thus far in regards to the specific intentions for the new extension. The only available resource is the periodic publications by the media (Le Journal de Montreal and Gazette). And in this the complications of realizing the project are clear.

The metro line in Laval has been awaited since 1981 when it was promised by politicians. The engagement of the project has been announced several times and only now is it underway. But still the project is not expected to be in use until August of 2004 at the earliest.

The first station is proposed to be located at the intersection of boul. Cartier and boul. Laurentien. The second station will extend to CEGEP Montmorency, with an entrance likely on boul. Notre Dame. Most recently there has been complications in regards to the cost of the project as one kilometer of the extension had not been factored in resulting in an increase of the estimated 179 million to 450 million. The added cost was a result of a seperate electrical centre and internal security system that had not been factored in previously. It has also been made public by the administration of mayor Gilles Vaillancourt, that the new stations will be concieved of as modestly as possible so as to reduce the expense. Le Ministre des Transport, Guy Chevrette also assures that this will be the case. (Le Journal de Montreal, Mercredi, 2 Fevrier 2000)
