neutrality, definition #2

Neutrality in architecture...

...allows for individuality while simultaneously contributes to homogeneity.

...has the effect of disorientation by being undifferentiated.

...can be described as the sponge of non-place, a term that is characterszed (in opposition to anthropological place) as "a space which cannot be defined as relational, or historical, or concerned with identity" (Auge)

...is "without symbolic or metaphorical allusions", and thus relies on "a form of meaning that is derived directly from...above all, how [the architecture] is experienced" (Ibelings, Supermodernism)

Examples of non-places or typologies/spaces conducive to neutrality in architecture include: airports, hotels, supermarkets, cyberspace & office space.
