In
coming up with an idea for a framing device, I looked at some works of
Richard Long and photocopied some images that I particularly liked.
The image on the right intrigued me because I initially thought he had
designated two lines but the title "A Line in Bolivia" suggested a single
line.
So
then I realized that he had cleared away the rocks on both sides to produce
the singular line. I found that reversal/inversion fascinating, for
I was automatically drawn to the voided, negative space first and it was
only when I was provoked by the reading of the title did I questioned what
it was that I was seeing. So perhaps I could invoke a questioning of the
image that one views through the framing device by introducing negative
spaces in my frame.

In
trying to concretize my concept, I looked to words to give a sudden spurtz
of insight. The thesaurus-another source of inspiration.
